Port is Delicious… but strong!

Published by kim under Wine

Port is a wine that is great for after dinner (desert) and pairs with chocolate.

I discovered this delight at a local wine tasting of more than 20 wineries from Colorado.  So, I decided to try more… different brands of Port… two types of Port (Ruby Port and Tawny Port).

Yes, I tried cheap and a little more expensive (keeping to my rule of not going over $20 a bottle).

Observations:

Breckenridge Port - Yum, but expensive! $21 for a smaller bottle (I only tasted it at the wine event, but my friend bought a bottle because she liked it, too)

Cockburn’s (just under $10) Ruby Red - the smell about knocked me out… I think this one must need to sit out for a little while before drinking.  The color and body were good.  If I get this one again, I will let it breathe for a little while and drink from a glass that my nose doesn’t go into while taking a sip.

Taylor New York Label ($4) - The bottle said it was good on ice.  It was a little thin even without the ice. Not bad.  Not sure if I would purchase it again.

Sheffield Tawny Port - good, but couldn’t have it with something sweet because it tasted like nuts and raisins to me.

Graham’s Six Grapes ($17) - Ruby - Good, not overpowering with the smell, yummy, but boy did my head hurt after two tiny glasses the night before

I know the Ruby Port will go good with chocolate.  I hope to find the perfect combination… I will keep trying.

Wine is Fine!

Published by kim under Wine

Like my subject line? Wine is really growing on me and while I am certainly not a wine expert, I do enjoy branching out and learning more about it. Wine Tastings have provided me the ability to experience wine. Typically, I go for slightly chilled and sweet - not so much dry. Ahh…someday I will be more sophisticated and enjoy the drier wines…but I digress.

A few months ago, I tasted Muscadine and enjoyed it very much. Apparently it has some health benefits, too!

“Recent research has shown muscadine to be an excellent source of resveratrol, dietary fiber, and certain essential minerals. Some of the effects of consuming muscadine include: lowering bad cholesterol levels; elevating good cholesterol levels; decreasing incidence of coronary heart disease; increasing anti-cancer effects; and regulating metabolism.” ~ Karen, TB Sommelier, http://www.totalbeverage.net/Blog/default.asp?Display=25

My observations: Nice and sweet. I would purchase it again.

Raising my glass to you. Cheers!
